Positive classroom climate


In the third meeting, we learnt about Climate Variables: Creating a Motivating Environment. This is an interesting topic, unfortunately we learnt this after the school experience program. My SEP will be better if I learnt this topic before I start my SEP.
The main point from this session is how important creating a positive classroom climate in  our class. Positive classroom climate is a classroom environment where the teacher and the students work together to achieve the goals of learning. This is very crucial to increasing the students’ motivation towards learning.
The climate variables that can creating a motivating environment are order and safety, success, challenge, and task comprehension.
Order and safety mean that students should feel safe physically and mentally. Teacher should create an environment that supports the students’ autonomy. When the students feel comfortable to participate the whole activities, maybe we can say that the student already feel secure or safe in the learning process.

Success is about the students’ self-efficacy development. Assessing students’ current understanding by asking them some open-ended questions in the beginning the class can help the teacher to get succes in the lesson. Let the students know about their progress by providing them detailed feedback also helping teacher succeeding the lesson.
Challenge refers to the challenging task. It is important to give the student challenging tasks to increase the students’ self-efficacy.
Task comprehension is about the students’ awareness of what they are going to learn and why this lesson is important for them.
After we learnt about climate variables, we watched some video that showed the teaching and learning processes. We were asked to analyze the climate variable. The main point that I got from the videos is how important to make our students feel comfortable during learning.  If they do not feel comfortable, they will not focus and they will get nothing from the learning activity and we could say that our teaching is failed.
Creating challenging task is difficult for me. If my students complain about difficult of the task that I gave, I decreased it. I should not doing that. Next time, I will not  doing this mistake again. I hope I will be better in my next SEP.
