Communicating Effectively with Parents and Intervening when Misbehavior Occurs By: Nurlelah

Teachers are main actor s in the class; they are powerful and also stand in strong position. However, teachers do not think that they can do everything for their students with any reason. Teachers also have to think about students’ needs. Hence, teachers and students must build two ways communication. They must have good communication in the class and outside because it will be easy for teachers to know students’ needs and also problems.
Teachers are parents for students in schools. The teachers also have to make comfort zone for students to build students confidence, trust and safety. The students also have to respect their teachers as their parents. They can work together in the class. Making good communication is the best way to create good behavior of students and achievement in the class. However, the teachers also can work together with students’ parents. The teachers cannot work alone because students only six hours in the school and most of their time are spent in their home and outside. When the teachers, students and parents can work together in their part, it is possible to get the objectives of learning and teaching. They have to respect each other, they must realized that learning and teaching is not only job for teachers but also students and parents have to take their part to achieve the goal.

Serious Management Problems: Violence and Aggression By: Nurlelah

Actually I am still confusing why the students make violence and also aggression each others. There is no profit that they will give when they do that action. They just give some accidents and injury because of it. However, violence and aggression still happen until now.
Based on my experiences in teaching in SMAN 82 Jakarta, the students were known often make violence and aggression with another school. When I interviewed one of student there, he said that he did it because of pride. He said that he and his friends did it because they got support from their classmate and alumni. The headmaster and teachers already make some rules for students who do violence and aggression. They also try to communicate with parents. Teachers, students and parents work together and also make an agreement about this. One of action to avoid violence and aggression is the school doe not have uniform of batik that is characteristic of each school. The students are free to wear whatever batik every Thursday. It is done to cover the school’s label. In my opinion that is a good way to avoid violence or aggression because sometime the students who are wearing school uniform with label will be easy to identify from another school.
Someday I will be a teacher in senior high school. If I were in that position, I would give some positive activities for students in school. It is like extra-kulikuler that is provided to explore students’ needs, interest, talent and also hobby. If the students are busy with positive activities that they like, they will spend their time in school. Hence, extra-kulikuler should be developed in the school to prevent students roam the streets after hours after school.

Planning for Effective Classroom Management By: Nurlelah

Long time ago I thought that classroom management was about sitting arrangement. However, it is not simple as I thought. Classroom management is very important in teaching because the class will run well when we manage the class well too. Classroom management is a part of teaching to achieve our objective. When we do not care about classroom management, the class will be uncontrolled and also difficult to handle. Hence, we really need to manage our class for achieving the objectives of class.
Based on my experiences in SDN 01 Selong when I did school experiences, I feel easy manage the class in elementary school because I taught children around 7-12 years old. They were funny and fun in the class. They were easy to do my activity and follow my instruction. They did well and they showed me the best thing that they did. However, it will be different when I teach in senior high school. I have bad experiences when I taught in SMAN 82 Jakarta. Most of students did not want to study and they did not hear my explanation. Some of them just care to their gadget and even there was a student slept in the class. Hence, classroom management is not same in every level. We have to take seriously. Start from sitting arrangement, rules of class, time, reward and also punishment in the class. The best thing for managing the class is the teachers have to tell the classroom management in early meeting. Teachers and students make an agreement about what is allowed or not in the class. We also can stick the rules that we make together on the wall. So, teachers and students can see everyday the rules and also remind each other about the rules of class.

Look at the picture !. What do you think about that? Have you ever seen that condition in your class or you were which one of that students?
Based on my experiences in teaching at school. I always remembered that starting the lesson was more difficult because I have to get their attention. So, I have to make an interesting activity to open the lesson. Usually, I always asked about their condition, we talked each other first about the up to date news or just knowing each others. If I remind I seen stupid in front of them. I did it because I wanted to nearby them. I tried to make simple talk to be closer or recall their name first before starting the class.
For developing students’ interest in learning there are many steps that have to be done. First, introductory focus, this steps to attract students’ attention in the beginning of lesson and provide a conceptual framework of lesson.
Second, personalization, this step is done to know students’ characteristics because the teachers try to involved themselves in students’ live. This way is very useful because it can make students feel comfort in learning. According to hierarchy of needs theory by Maslow, this step is involved in second and third level. It talks about safety, secure, belonging, love and affection. If the teacher can involve to students’ live, they will work together in the class because they are like a family. It can make students easier to understand the materials.
Based on my experiences in SEP for maintaining students’ attentions are not easy, especially for children because they have not handled their feeling yet.  Hence, the teachers have to make an effort to maintain it. If the students can pay their attention from the start to the end of lesson, it means the teachers success in teaching process. I could say that because based on my experiences in SEP at school maintained students’ attention was difficult. I have experiences in teaching at elementary school. At the first time, they were very enthusiastic because met us as new teachers there. In the opening they were crazy, they are involved in the activity but in the middle of learning time, they felt lazy, tired and seen did not to learn. Hence, I tried to make a joke for getting their smile and their energy after that I asked them to pay attention in the next activity. Ya, as we probably know that be a great teacher is not easy because they have to manage the class, students and also inspire the students.
