Classroom Climate
In this reflection, I would like to reflect my experience
when I taught in School Experience Program (SEP). For this semester, I was
assigned to teach in Global Prestasi, Bekasi. I taught group A, perhaps it
sounds little bit weird, because there was no grade system there because they
applied SKS system. Further, I am going to relate my experience to the theory
that I have got about classroom climate.
Classroom climate consists of three variables. The first
variable is order and safety, the second variable is success and the last
variable is challenge. Order and safety here means that a classroom is a place
where the students feel comfort and secure to learn. Frankly, to make sure that
each student feels comfort during the class was incredibly difficult. It was
because I was a new teacher for them at that time. We did not know much each
other hence on the first day I spent almost one hour as introduction session.
Although it was the first time I encountered that class, I could easily saw
that the students did not mingle with the whole class because they tended to
grouping themselves or what we called as ‘gang’. Then I came up with the idea
to make an agreement and hopefully it would make them getting closer each
other.
The next variables are success and challenge. Success means
the teacher is able to build self-efficacy among students. That was my concern
first before go to the learning I process because I believe if I could build a
good relationship with my students then it will be easier to hook them to be
engaged in learning and teaching process. I started it with having small talk
with the students. Although it was only small talk but it was pretty effective
if we do that with all of our heart. The last variable is about the challenge. Challenge
here means that the teacher can activate a competitive atmosphere among the
students such giving a challenging task for them. Well, honestly I did that but
it did not give effect to students. If I gave them challenging task then they
would be lazy to do that. It was because they were lack of competitive feeling
in doing assessments. Well, I could not do anything because four times meeting
were not enough to make them do the assessment passionately.
Overall, it is not a big deal for me. It just a matter of
time to see them become super-students who will feel challenged as it goes with
the challenging task given. They are all nice students. They just need to be
motivated J
