The Last Meeting of MMSEL Course

The previous meeting of MMSEL course was the last meeting of this course. What we have learned about MMSEL course was about Case study and Belief. The meeting has handled by students’ presentation. There are two groups presentation who delivered about case study and belief in influence motivation.

There are so many cases in the education that existed especially in the classroom such as disruptive behavior. There are so many causes that probably happen such as disability, lack of control, lack of creativity in learning, uncomfortable atmosphere, etc. disruptive behavior give negative impact in teaching learning process. It may distract students’ and teacher’s focus on learning in hence it may cause frustrating for the teacher in managing the class and convey the material.

Disruptive behavior should avoid in the classroom. As a teacher she/he should provided interesting activity, build relax atmosphere, and so on, so that students only focus on the learning process. Teacher also should have well-management of classroom. It may help teacher cope some problems that probably happen during teaching learning process.

In this meeting we learned about how to solve some cases that probably happen in the classroom during teaching and learning process. Besides that we also learned about belief in motivation which belief is influence motivation in learning.

Belief is important to our life because it can increase our motivation to do everything especially in learning. Belief is a cognitive idea we accept as true without necessarily having definitive evidence to support it (Eggen, cp.10). There are three types of belief which is influence motivation that is belief about outcomes (expectation), intelligence, capability, value and causes of performance.

Expectation is a belief about a future outcome that might be happen. It is sometime influence by their past experience. Students who usually succeed in past will expect succeed in the future and the opposite students who did not succeed in the past it will difficult to them to belief that they will succeed in the future. According to Eggen (cp.10) stated that designing learning experience that are in the students’ zones of proximal development and provide the scaffolding necessary to ensure success are the way that can be use by teacher to increase students’ motivation to learn for student whose expectations for success are low.    

Belief about intelligence is belief that intelligence is essentially fixed and stable over time (Dweck, 1999; in Eggen, cp.10). Belief about intelligence helps students to think and belief that they will succeed if they work harder or use more strategies, to increase their ability.

Belief about capability or self-efficacy is tending to belief on their capability in accomplishing a specific task. There are some factors that influence on belief about capability such as past performance, modeling, verbal persuasion (such as teacher’s commenting), and anxiety.

Belief about value is individual’s belief on benefit, rewards, or advantage that may result from participating in a task or activity. There are three types of believe value that is attainment value, it refers to belief that they can do well on task. Second is utility value, it is belief on activity, topic or course will useful for their future goal. Third cost, it is about belief on a consideration of must give up to engage in the task by any reason.

Next is attribution which it is belief about causes of performance. They belief that lack of performance cause by any reason such as lack of ability, lack of effort, etc. attribution influence learner in four way that are emotional reactions to success and failure, expectations for future success, future effort, and achievement.

Belief has big influence motivation in learning. It according to learner’s belief if they belief that they will succeed then they will motivate to increase their effort and prepare more strategies to achieve their goal. On the other hand, if they belief that they will not success then they will think about failure without any effort to achieve their goal to be succeed.

MMSEL Project's Reflection

Flood Disaster…

Flood is one of problems that often happen in Jakarta especially for them who lived in coastal areas. Today flood attacked violently Jakarta. Tragic. It is because the high of quality of rain that made Jakarta almost sinks. Nowadays, it becomes big problem for citizen of Jakarta because it may hamper their activities because it happens in every part of Jakarta. Besides that, there are so many people who lost their wealth because of flood. Hence, there are so many victims everywhere, even there are so many human corpses founded. There are so many disadvantages for this disaster especially for them who become the victims. 

The disaster made us difficult to do our MMSEL project which will be held on Ancol on Sunday 20, 2013. It canceled immediately because Ancol is one of flood victims while flood made some streets could not be access. It was become big problem to us it means that we cannot conduct the activity there since flooding still happen.

Considering about the due date of project report then we create new plan for this project so that, this project should be conducted as soon as possible. Thinking about new idea in the condition such like this is not easy thing that can be made, considering about the condition that happened. Unfortunately, remembering about the flood then my friend has initiative to hold the activity in the flood victim. However, we must revise the proposal from the beginning till the end. It is not big problem I think, what I think is about how we can be doing a project without consulting with the lecture Ms. Mima.

Moreover finally the project conducted in Rawajati. It is one of the victim floods near in Pancoran. The participants of this project are some children around. This activity runs around 2 hours. In this activities also helped by some activists from KAMMI. Actually they have activity to help victim flood but they did not has any activities yet so that this is our opportunity to have cooperative with them in order to conduct our activity.

Honestly, there is no special activities that prepared we just have simple activity but hopefully it will motivate. The activities comprise of storytelling, sharing session (it’s about how to keep environment in order to achieve healthy life, and the last is drawing. Firstly, the activity opened by pray and then story telling. The story telling has core value about helping each other to have good relationship each other. It is talked about the frog and the snail which become friendship because of helping each other.

Furthermore, the next activity is sharing session. In this opportunity my friend told them how important of pleasant environment which mean clean, comfortable and safe in order to avoid any disaster such as flood that have been happening there. Besides that the children also gave how to keep good environment such as not to throw trash in the river. The last activity is drawing. In this session the participants asked to draw any environment that they want to. Then after that they share their picture in front of the other. The activity finished by give them some snack and some books that might use by them.

Most of all the activities are running well. All of the participants are enthusiasm during the activity. It followed by more than 40 participants where the target is 40 children. It seemed they are comfortable with the activities. It looked by their participation and their spirit in following every activity. Fortunately, there are some kids who did not get the snack fairly because they out of target but unfortunately while we distribute the snack there is some contributor who came and asked us to distribute some snack that they brought so that our problem has solved.

This activity gives new experience for me. It is my first opportunity to see flood victims in directly. It is so miserable. However I felt happy since I could help them to make them laugh by our activities, at least there is activity that they followed to assuage their traumatic of flood rather than they are swimming in the river. Moreover, in the sharing session during drawing session one of the participants draw about Jakarta’s environment which is solid by any citizen, pollution, etc. he told us that “My Jakarta, full of citizen, pollution, trashes, and other. If it is to be continue so how about us? Continuation of this nation?” I, as myself felt carried away with those words. The child 6 grade of elementary school could bensaid some words like that. It is so miserable.

Bullying as Students' Problem

Nowadays, bullying is not the new issue in education world. It mostly happened in any level of education. Bullying can be happen in everywhere such as school, university or even in society.  Bullying is one of serious problems that should be get serious attention. It seemed usual but it may give big impact on students’ ability in learning and mostly it is negative. There are so many cases which talked about this topic and any way to solve this problem but in fact, this case still exists in school.

Bullying is one of violence that often happens in school. Basically, it is the bad thing that should be avoid by students or even the teacher itself. Bullying can involve any age, including younger elementary grade and even kindergarten students. Bullying behavior can intimidate students’ physical and emotional safety at school. It may cause a victim to feel upset, afraid, ashamed, embarrassed, and anxious about going to school. It also may cause student’s traumatic and stress.

Van der Kolk, McFarlane, and Weisaeth (in Terry, 2012; 2007) state, “Trauma in childhood can disrupt normal developmental processes. Because of their dependence on their caregivers, their incomplete biological development, and their immature concepts of themselves and their surroundings, children have unique patterns of reaction and needs for intervention.” According to Ziegler (in Terry, 2012; 2002) argue that a child who has repeatedly bullied will effect on traumatic and it can influence of developmental processes and parts of their brains. So that it is the reason why bullying should be banned. The best way to address bullying is to stop it before it starts. However, “Bullies are about power and control, and confronting them or stepping in to stop them usurps their sense of power.” (Wolk, 2010)

Good Communication

Good Communication Trough Parents and Teacher for Successful Learning

            What we have learned in the previous meeting of MMSEL course was about communicating effectively with parents and intervening when misbehaviors occur. Communication is the way to express ideas, feelings, or giving information to the people. Communication makes people easy to convey and to receive information. Communication is important in our daily live. It may help people in making relationship or even solving the problem.

A good relationship established by good communication between each other. As a teacher she/he should have good communication between teacher and students, and teacher with parents, so that there is cooperation between teacher and parents, and also between teacher and students to help students in achieving successful learning.

            Teaching is teacher’s job. However as a teacher he/she should has good in communication. Good communication needed in teaching to make students understand details of the materials which delivered, so that it may help students to achieve their successful learning.  If teacher has good communication he/she will easy to deliver their materials well. By good communication it may help teacher to build relationship with students so then she/he knows her/his students well and deeper in order to help students in achieving successful teaching and learning.

            Besides teacher, parents also must know about what students do in school. Because of that reason, teacher needs to establish good relationship between teacher and parents so that there is cooperation between teacher and parents in order to beneficence of student or their child.  It may help students to achieve students’ successful learning.

            However, making cooperation between teacher and parents is not an easy thing that can be doing by teacher. Not all of parents care with their children. Sometimes, parents do not subjected their children attentively as well. Indeed parents sometimes do not know about students’ activities in school, whether they are good student or not. There are so many factors why parents doing that. It can be as teacher’s obstacle in making cooperation between teacher and parents.
