Serious Management Problems

In this meeting, I learned about serious behavior problems that happened in the school. They are defiant students, students’ aggression, students’ bullying and violence. All of those problems relate to the attitude and behavior problem. Defiant student means student who likes breaking the rules, disturbing the learning with sudden and annoyed expression or behavior or etc. I had an experience about dealing with defiant student when I was in School Experience Program. He looked at me with the weird glance. He looks normal in the appearance. I just found he was quite different when I did groups’ discussion. He rejected to do that task in groups. He kept asking why should be done in groups. Then after telling him about the reason, I found him disappeared. He went somewhere I did not know. And then, he came back to the class, and asked some questions by yelling to me. I came to him and answered with normal calm voice. That’s how I deal with that defiant student at that time.
I was wondering if I am the example of aggressive student. I am calm and composed. However, once I got hurt or disappointed. I could be seriously aggressive. I could not find myself anymore at that kind of moment. I am blind. I know I have energies more than ordinary man that what makes me work harder than a man. Subconsciously, I take an advantage of it. I make myself as crowded as possible. I get myself busy to maximize it. Then, I have been bully and the bullies. I started being bullied since I was in my elementary school. Some of superior students who were rich really hate me so much. They humiliated me, threw me something, spread bad rumor and etc. Thank God, I do have very strong mentality as well. It did not really bother me. I never had intention to bully someone if I did it, it must be in the name of joking or kidding. I like kidding my friends around by making cruel threats or rude joking. It makes them scare of me and I enjoy it. Violence is truly of my mind. I promise myself not to do it. I definitely disagree and against it.  School, teacher, and parent need to concern about these problems. They need to create strategies and long-term solution to prevent and solve those problems when happened. Finally, schools’ rules and policies become the final product that needed to be socialized and followed by the students.

Effective Communication to the Teachers

Communication is a key to deliver any information needed. Communication is really crucial in the school context where the teacher needs to communicate with another such as students, other teachers, headmaster, parents and etc. So, that is why teacher is required to have an ability to communicate effectively since they need to deliver some good or even bad information to the parents such as misbehavior or other regulations’ violence done by their children. According to what I learned in previous meeting was what is effective communication for teachers and the way to communicate effectively.

I reflect to the role play that I did in that meeting. At that time, we have been given some cases that relate to the students’ misbehavior like get caught kissing at the school, leave the classroom without reason, bring the pornography book and etc. I think those cases are truly possible to happen in the school since the students are really curious and willing to try something new. When these cases happened, teacher is suggested to have some strategies in communicating it wisely to the parents. The reasons why teacher needs to have strategies in communicating effectively because they will face some types of parents who are not the same (various). The parents could be cooperative, could be ignorant, or even could be offensive about their children.

So, I think what teacher needs to do are trying to ask the parents how their children behave at home (outside the school), tell the parents the case systematically, clearly and wisely, and find the solution toward this case (it can be also punishment). Every solution has to be concerned by parents and teachers, so it means that teacher and parent are working together to solve t  his problem.

The Most Effective Classroom Management

Classroom Management is all about how the teacher create and manage good classroom climate and environment in order to succeed the teaching and learning process and motivate students to be active during the process. I might reflect to my teaching experiences during School Experience Program (SEP). I remember that I got some obstacles in order to do classroom management. They were students’ discipline, classroom size, seat arrangement and etc.
Based on my experience, I prefer to manage classroom alone instead of with my friends. It means that I enjoyed teaching individual than pairs. It’s because of sometimes I found students were confused which directions that they should follow (too much different directions of teachers). I also could know my students better and guide them all. However, I think I have my most effective classroom management during my SEP.
It was when I taught in SMA Santa Theresia. The students were very discipline, smart and cooperative. So that’s why I could manage the classroom very well. Then, in my opinion, I prefer the class became noisy and messy instead of silent and arranged. I really enjoyed my all of my teaching experiences.

Instructional Variables :)

In this meeting, we learned about Instructional Variables: Developing Interest in Learning Activity. Instructional variables consist of Introductory Focus, Personalization, Involvement, and Feedback. In general, this topic will tell about how the teacher wakes up students’ interest in the learning.  So that’s why Mrs. Mima asked us to do very short and brief opening after our presentation. Introductory focus tells about how teacher attracts attention and creates conceptual framework for student in the beginning of the lesson. Personalization stands for the process of linking students’ emotional and intelligent to the students’ life. Then, next topics are involvement and feedback. Involvement means students need to actively get involved to their own learning. The last is feedback which refers to comment or opinion of teacher toward students’ work could be evaluative and descriptive feedback.
If I do flashback to my teaching experience in SEP, I was trying to do those 4 principles of instructional variables subconsciously. In the beginning of the lesson, after doing roll call and explaining about learning objectives and agenda, I did an introductory focus. I taught narrative text at that time. I started the lesson by showing them a picture of Cinderella and Malin Kundang then asked them “what comes to your mind when seeing this picture?” Almost most of them answered “story, fictive, past, fairy tale and etc.” Then, I was asking about the story and what happened to the character. Then, my students and I were discussing and trying to relate and take moral message of the story toward their real life (it belongs to the personalization). Moreover, I gave them some tasks need to be done by them. I applied guided discovery and group discussion to handle the tasks. Then, I scored them and collect the assessment. In the next meeting, I gave the papers back to them. I wrote evaluative and descriptive feedback for all of the students (customized for each person).
In my opinion, instructional variables are really crucial to the teaching and learning. It provides teacher complete stages start from the beginning (hook attention) till giving feedback in the end of the task or lesson. These variables will benefit not only for teachers but also for students.

Successful Learning? It's positive climate classroom

3rd - Reflection.

This was first class after School Experience Program. The topic that Bu Mima brought was Climate Variables: Creating a Motivating Environment. Before starting the lesson, we shared our experiences during this SEP that more or less related to the MMSEL subject. Positive classroom climate defines as atmosphere that both of teachers and students could help, study and complement each other in order to achieve learning goals. Positive classroom climate is also crucial in motivating students to learn within the classroom. In motivating students, there are others thing beside positive classroom climate such as self-regulated learners, teacher characteristics,  and instructional variables.
In order to apply positive classroom climate successfully, there are some variables that need to be had such as Order and Safety, Success, Challenge and Task Comprehension. Order and safety means the students could predict the learning, and then they also could feel secure and comfortable during the learning. Success refers to the students’ self-efficacy development. What teacher needs to be done to success the learning is questioning students before the learning (to reflect to the schemata) and provided scaffolding to the students before they do the task. Moreover, providing evaluative feedback is also helping teachers succeeding the lesson. Then, challenge is defined as the process of enhancing the feeling of students’ competence. While students could successfully finish their task also by doing scaffolding, it will indirectly increase students’ perception of competence. The last is task-comprehension which means students are aware about what they are going to learn, what they are expected to do, what benefits that they are going to get, and how important this lesson for them.
We have been provided some videos to be discussed within the classroom. I found some interesting facts from those videos. First, students really need to feel secure and comfortable because if they don’t, the learning might be failed and face some obstacles. Then, telling the learning agenda and objective are also essential to students included providing authentic materials to them and so on. I reflect to my teaching practices in my SEP. I found myself lack of challenge. It’s because of I reduce the level of difficulty then I did not provide enough examples (also scaffolding) to my students. Hope I could do better teaching in another teaching practice.
