Stop Bullying in School

In my opinion bullying is always become an interesting topic. Until now bullying is still happen in everywhere especially school. Many cases about bullying happened and become hot issue in social. According to online article since 2007 – 2012, there were many cases about bullying happened in Jakarta. The cases involved kindergarten’s students until college. Based on survey that conducted by lattitude news in 40 countries, Indonesia is the second country with the highest bullying case that happened in school. There are four kinds of bullying, physical bullying, verbal bullying, social bullying and cyber bullying. According to the survey, in Indonesia cyber bullying is the highest case that often happened. It is because as a country with the high population, Indonesia have Facebook user fourth the most in the world so that Indonesian children tend to have cyber bullying.

Looking to that fact, I think it is a homework that should be solve by Indonesian people, especially educator. Bullying is a serious problem. If we do not solve it maybe our nation will be destroyed. Here educator can help by giving knowledge to all of students even adult about the dangerous of bullying. Besides, I think the students should get moral education.

In fact, I think there are still many teacher and school who did not stop bullying. There are still some schools which have MOS (Masa Orientasi Siswa). The most thing happened in MOS is bullying from senior to junior. When I was entered senior high school, I also experienced MOS. There was activity where senior did verbal bullying to the junior (new students) and the activity have permission from the teachers. In this case what I want to ask is does the teacher know that it is verbal bullying. If they know so why they give the senior permission to do that. The school always said that MOS is activity that school did to make new students become discipline. I think the reason is no sense because the fact that happened is senior assume that this event is an activity to release their emotion and make junior students as a victim. So, I think it will be better if all of school in Indonesia especially for junior and senior high school to wipe out MOS and replace it with a better activity such as make a session about moral education.

Parents' Linkage in Students Education to Solve Misbehavior Problem

Education for students are not only become responsibility for school but also need support from another part such as parents. Parents also have responsibility to work each other with all part of school especially working together between teacher and parents.  As we may know students have two worlds, school and home. In school teacher is become their parents and have responsibility to educated them. Meanwhile in home there are parents who have responsibility to educated them. I think both teacher and parents should know the characteristics and behavior of the students in home and school. So, they can control the students well.
There are many cases happen about parents’ linkage in education. One of the cases that usually happen are parents did not know that their children have a problem in school and there is no communication between teacher and parents about the children. The problem is student always said to their parents he/she always went to school every day, but in fact the student often did not come to school without permission. This problem will give impact to the students score and performance in school and he/she will loss the material that should he/she get. Unfortunately when the teacher call and tell to the parents about the problem, the parents will say that they only know that their children always go to the school every day.
According to the case above, I think the case may not happened if there is a good communication between teacher and parents. The fact that always happen especially in some school in Indonesia teacher invite the parents to the school only in the end of semester to take students’ report. According to what I learned from MMSEL (Motivation and Management of Students for Effective Learning) subject, I think it will be better if the teacher make a schedule of parents meeting to discuss about the students. The schedule can be conduct in the first of new semester, in the middle of the semester and in the end of the semester so that the parents will know the progress of the students learning process in school. Besides, the teacher can give portfolio assignment for the students so the parents also can see their children process in learning.
There is a cartoon film that I like, it is “Doraemon”. In “Doraemon” film the teacher from Nobita’s school always invite the parents in the middle of the semester to see directly what students do in classroom. I think it can be a reference from Indonesia’s education because I think it is a good way to make communication between teacher, students and parents. So, from the case that I know and from what I have learned I think parents linkage is really important in education.

Grabbing Students’ Attention in the Opening of Class

Opening is an important thing in teaching learning process. In the opening of teaching, teacher should know how to make students interested to the opening. If they have interested to the opening it will be easier to lead them to the topic. Although, the opening is should be related to the topic that the teacher will teach. To make students interested to the lesson, the teacher should make the opening that can grab students’ attention. Besides, the activity in the opening should make all of students engage in classroom activity. According to my experienced and my observation during school experience program, nowadays the students more like fun activity in classroom, and it usually can motivate them in learning. The activities that can make the students motivated are games, brainstorming that related to their real life, etc. I think the more important thing is use authentic material, such as related our material to the real life, so they can illustrate it.
I have experienced teaching English in senior high school during school experience program. I taught about expression giving instruction. In the opening, I did open-ended questions. I asked them whether they ever giving instruction to others or not. I gave them the situation example such as in restaurant. Then, the students are motivated to tell about their experience in giving instruction. Moreover, they mention me as a teacher who gave them instruction, such as asked them to pray before class and asked them to do task. From their expression in answer my question, I think the students have known and ever practice the material in their real life and I think the opening that I conducted was success to make students interested and engage to the material.
Actually in my opinion it is not easier to grab students’ attention in the opening of class. It is because I ever did not success to grab students’ attention in the opening. It was because of the characteristic of students were passive and it was the first day I taught them, so I did not know them enough and the students did not interested to the activity that I gave to them. So, I think beside the activity in the opening should be in a creative way, the teacher also should know the characteristic of the students so that the activity can make students interested and engage with it.

Climate Variables in My Class

I have school experience in SMAN 71 Jakarta. In there I taught XI social grade. I teach English in the class. In the opening of class I always did roll call, so I can know students who absent in that day. There are some activities that I gave to the students. First activity the students did teams group tournament (TGT). Each group stood up in a line they constructed a text about analytical exposition. This activity was a tournament, so one group competed with others group. Each member of group constructed a text like a chain. Each group has time ten minutes to finish the tournament. I did this activity to check whether the students have prior knowledge about analytical exposition or not.  

Then next activity was presentation by me. From the result of TGT I explained analytical exposition to them. After I explained it, I asked the students did filling in the blank individually. Then, after that I asked them to work in a group to make analytical exposition text. Before they made a text, they did a puzzle to get a topic of the text that they wrote. The topics were about some issues that happened in Indonesia such as traffic jam in Jakarta. Then, each group made a poster about the text that they have written.

According to my experienced, there was order and safety in my classroom, because the students always raised their hand if they have any questions or opinion. I think my class was success, because the students can did and finished their tasks on time. And then, from the individually task I think the students have understood about the material. Besides, I asked open-ended questions to the students related to the material. Then, when I did explanation I always gave them example that related to their real life. I also gave them feedback by giving comment to group’s performance when TGT activity. Although, there were some students who were did not gave their attention in the middle of class.

According to what I have done in the class, I think my activities is quite challenging for the students. It is because the students should make a text based on the topic that I gave to them and they should implement it to the poster. And the topic is also related to their real activities. So they can express their opinion and argument about the issue that happens around them. And then, I think the task was motivated students, because they made the illustration of their writing on the poster. Although, the task was could not increasing all of students’ feeling of autonomy and value. It is because there were still some students who did not discussion with their group and only made a joke in classroom. According to that case, monitor the classroom activity is very important to make the class more conducive and make all of students involve in the all of activities.

The Influence of Needs in Senior High School

I believe that every people have needs to fulfill their life as a human. According to Maslow, there are five stages of needs to fulfill our life. The first is physiological. In this stage as human we need food, water, shelter, and warmth. It can help us to survive in our life. I think I have this stage, because if I am hungry, I always eat some food, I use water to drink, take a bath, etc. I have a place for save me from rain, cold, etc. The second stage is safety. There is a law that can save me from criminalization, and I can save myself from the dangerous by use variety of ways. The third stage is self-belonging. In this stage I have parents, family and friends that love me. The fourth stage is self-esteem and the last is self-actualization needs.
In fulfill our needs in life, I believe every people have motivation to reach their needs and goals. There are four needs that can influence our motivation. There are needs of autonomy, needs of competence, needs of relatedness, and needs of self-worth.
According to Maslow needs of autonomy happen when people want to life independent. Meanwhile needs of relatedness happen when someone who are not famous in school and she/he try to be known by other people in school, such as she/he want the teacher know her/him in class so, she/he try some ways to make it happen. In the needs of self-worth there is self-handicapping. Self-handicapping itself means that an action which prevents a person from being responsible for failure (Kolditz & Arkin, 1982). Self-handicapping usually is used by someone to maintain self-esteem and self-worth in certain condition. There is the example of needs of competence based on my experience. I ever experienced that I want to solve all of the tasks that teacher give to me although I have difficulties when I did it.
Then, another experienced is when I was senior high school, I did self-handicapping to help me for maintain self-esteem and self-worth. I did it in many situations, such as when I got a bad score in the subject that I felt confident in, I said to my friends that I didn’t study well last night so, I didn’t confident in the test. Another case that when I didn’t want my friends cheated my homework, but they asked me to lend out my homework to them, and I said that I didn’t finish my homework yet so I cannot lend it to them. I think I always did self-handicapping when I was senior high school because of certain condition.

Teacher as Inspire and Motivator

           As we may know every people have a goal and dream in their life, include me. Every people will have different strategy to reach their goal and dreams. Then, there is a motivation to do the strategy and reach the goal. Based on what I learnt in motivation and management of students for effective learning, motivation is something that can force and give spirit for us to reach our desires, goals or dreams. There are two kinds of motivation, intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is motivation that comes from ourselves, such as I want to be a teacher because I like teaching and I like children. Meanwhile extrinsic motivation is motivation that comes from another, such as I like mathematic because of the teacher use interesting way when teaching.

            I have experienced about motivation. When I was in senior high school I like biology subject because of my dream to be a doctor, so I like all of material in biology especially material about human organs, such as circulatory and digestive organ in the human body. Then, I like English subject because my teacher gave me a compliment about my score in front of all my friends. He said that I am very good in English and I got the highest score in telling story test. So, I was very happy at that time and I became like English subject.

            From my experienced that I have explained before, I can learn that teacher is very important role for students especially in giving positive spirit and motivation. So, it is an important point for me as a candidate of teacher that I should have skill of how give motivation to my students in the future. Although that, I become thinking over that can I make myself to become an inspiring teacher for my students? I think it is hard to become inspiring teacher. In my opinion not all of people can inspire another and not all people can success become motivator. If I am become a teacher in the future maybe the first step that I will take is do personal approach to all of my students and try to know about their characteristics, so I can know the way to give them motivation especially for learning. Then, it will be my homework to learn more again about all of that.
