Maslow’s hierarchy of needs really describe
us as a human. I do realize that as a human, we are never satisfied, we always
want more. However from the hierarchy which is described by Maslow it is clear
that our needs are divided into two kinds of needs: deficiency needs and growth
needs.
Deficiency needs include survival, safety,
belonging, and self-esteem. These are the needs which are described as basic
needs in our life. According to Maslow, as long as our basic needs cannot be
fulfilled, we will always look for them until they are fulfilled. Then after
our basic needs are fulfilled, we will move to growth needs:
self-actualization. This is the stage when we always look for more. For
example, B can speak English very well, but then B wants to learn other
languages too. Then B learns Chinese, after that B learns Japanese, B still
wants to learn German, Korean, French, etc.
I experienced that in my life too, I always
want to learn any languages. When we already fulfilled our basic needs then we
want to get something more. However some people do self-handicap either to
protect their pride or to make him/her look good in front of others. For
example, C studies hard for an exam, but on the day of examination C says to
others that C does not study at all. Apparently C gets the highest score among
all. C’s friends will think that C is really smart. In fact C studied a night
before the exam. I did self –handicap before too. The more I learn MMSEL, I
guess I can understand people more because we actually try to understand the
reasons behind people’s action.
