2nd reflection : The Influence of Needs on Motivation to Learn

In the second session, we learnt about the influence of needs toward motivation in learning. In this session, I learnt about Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. According to Maslow’s hierarchy, there are 5 steps of needs that each individual needs to be fulfilled stage by stage. There are four deficiency needs ( physiological, safety, love/belonging, esteem) and grow need (self-actualization). We will not be able to fulfill the grow need before fulfillling the deficiency needs. When we were a child we need food, safety, family, love, health, confidence more. After we grow up, we meet more people and various problem so that self-actualization need to be fulfilled.

Furthermore, we also learnt about self-determination theory. According to this theory, there are three innate needs. There are the need for competence, autonomy, and relatedness. The important thing that I got from this part is teacher has an important role to increase self-determination by assessment. This is very challenging for me as a teacher candidate to control my emotional reaction to influence my students’ perception about their competence, creating high level of student participation in classroom activities and how I make my students feel the feeling of being connected with each other in the class.

Last minutes, we also duscussed about self-worth theory.  In this discussion I just relized that how often I am in doing self-handicapping as a student, especially procratinating.  As a teacher, modeling effort and communicating incremental views of intelligence can help overcome students' tendency to perceive effort as an indicator of low ability.

Overall, I think as a teacher candidate I should learn this because I have to maximize my role, as a teacher, to know what my students need and in what stage they are so that I can help them by giving motivation toward learning.
