Based
on Kathy’s Class article about students’ motivation, actually in term of
motivation it has two kinds there are intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, but
in my opinion according to this article only focused on extrinsic motivation although only one aspect from intrinsic motivation.
For extrinsic, after we have been read, we can see from Susan’s side (student
of Brewster). Susan said:
"Actually I have always like history and knowing about the past,... and I am pretty good at it. My dad helps me. He says he wants to keep up with the world", Susan laughs.
"Actually I have always like history and knowing about the past,... and I am pretty good at it. My dad helps me. He says he wants to keep up with the world", Susan laughs.
So, Susan has extrinsic
motivation based on her father, because her father always helps her. Then, she also has intrinsic motivation because she is good at in history. While other student like Jim pretends to hate
history. Based on his thoughts, I can see that actually Jim has
his own motivation to learn history, but he pretends to hate history. In other
side, Brewster (his teacher) succeed made him interested in history, using her
interesting way to grabbing students’ attention. So, actually Jim's motivation
belongs to extrinsic motivation, based on the way of his teacher.
While, the teacher in this case has a big
influence to her students like Jim, Harvey, and Jenny. Brewster tries to grab
students’ attention through her interesting way. She gives compliment on
students’ work and appreciation, so that is why students have good self-esteem
on their self. Even the way she admonishes her student, she did appropriately
without make Jenny ashamed or down. She said quietly to Jenny directly not in
the forum. The teacher gives self-directed learning to the students, so the students can plan or choose what are thy strategies to learning to them.
